A longtime Roseville restaurant often called an old-school steakhouse is changing hands.
The owners of Mr. Paul’s Chophouse, on Groesbeck Highway, confirmed in a Thursday, May 21, Facebook post that the restaurant will come under new ownership. For weeks, speculation about a sale or new owners has been swirling on social media.
In making the announcement, the owners called it “a difficult process.”
Mr. Paul’s Chophouse, which got its start in 1968, announced that its owners are “preparing for a well-earned retirement.”
Paul, Chris and Peter Gogo, children of Paul Gogo, who founded the restaurant with his brother, Peter, are the owners.
“We are excited to share that Mr. Paul’s will continue under the leadership of three restaurateurs with more than 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry. Their passion for exceptional service, attention to detail, and commitment to preserving the traditions that make Mr. Paul so special made this retirement decision much easier,” the owners stated.
Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Peter Gogo reiterated to the Free Press that not much will change, and the owners will stay on for many months.
“There will be very little changes,” Gogo said, “the same chef, maitre d, most of the same employees.”
In their message to customers, the owners wrote that the restaurant’s menu and famous Caesar salad will stay the same.
In December, Mr. Paul’s landed on the Detroit Free Press’ list of Metro Detroit’s best steakhouses.
“Here, the portion sizes are colossal, meats are swimming in jus or drenched in butter, and servers are known for a good tableside performance,” wrote Lyndsay Green, Detroit Free Press dining critic.
Customer comments spoke of cherished memories of dining at Mr. Paul’s for celebration dinners, first dates, engagements and other events.
While the owners thanked customers for years of support, they remain confident that the restaurant will “remain a place where memories are made, traditions continue and guests are treated like family.”
