Peoria County deputy hurt in traffic stop shooting receives award

A Peoria County Sheriff’s Deputy who was injured after being shot by a man while conducting a traffic stop at a South Peoria gas station received the Hometown Hero award from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of Illinois.

Jack Evans, who was injured while conducting a traffic stop on Jan. 31 in the 1000 block of South Western Avenue, was presented with the award in a Thursday ceremony by acting U.S. Attorney Gregory Gilmore. Evans and another deputy were conducting the stop when a suspect fled the vehicle and ran.

During the chase, Larry D. Bell is accused of firing several shots. Evans, who has been with the department since 2023, sustained gunshot wounds to his legs and torso and was hospitalized.

The sheriff’s department praised Evans for his continued “courage, strength and professionalism” as he deals with the recovery from the shooting, saying that they were “grateful” to see him recognized and continue his duties even after his injuries.

The Hometown Hero awards are being provided by U.S. Attorney’s offices across the country as part of the continuing celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday. The award is designed to honor people who have “honored the enduring ideals of liberty, service, and civic responsibility,” showing commitment to those ideals through their service.
