Days of storms ended with more than 2 dozen tornadoes in Iowa

Consecutive days of severe thunderstorms brought an active week of hail and tornadoes.

Meteorologists with the National Weather Service have been surveying storm damage and weather data to confirm the more than two dozen tornadoes that hit the state.

The majority of the tornadoes were rated EF1, with two producing winds up to 110 mph.

Here’s a roundup of all the confirmed tornado reports in Iowa since May 16.

Confirmed tornadoes in Iowa on Saturday, May 16

Officials with the National Weather Service confirmed one tornado in Taylor County on Saturday, May 16.

The National Weather Service in Des Moines confirmed an EF-Unknown tornado near Gravity at 5:51 p.m. in Taylor County on May 16, with no estimated peak wind speed. The tornado traveled about 0.80 miles from Gravity to the southwest of the town and was approximately 20 yards wide. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

Confirmed tornadoes in Iowa on Sunday, May 17

There were at least 13 confirmed touchdowns in Iowa on Sunday, May 17.

No injuries or fatalities were reported from any of the tornadoes. Most of Sunday’s tornadoes occurred between 9 and 10:30 p.m. and were concentrated in north-central Iowa.

The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls also confirmed “several brief tornadoes” across a stretch of northwest Iowa from Sioux City, Salix, Kingsley, Cherokee and Milford on May 17. Wind gusts were between 60 and 90 mph according to the Sioux Falls office. Nine of the tornadoes were rated EF Unknown and one near Sioux City was rated EF-0

Confirmed tornadoes in Iowa on Monday, May 18

The National Weather Service in Des Moines confirmed that an EF0 tornado touched down near Benton in Ringgold County on Monday, May 18. The tornado, approximately 30 yards wide, traveled 6 miles in just 7 minutes, reaching peak winds of around 80 mph. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

What’s the forecast in Des Moines?

Cloudy skies will persist across the Des Moines metro on Thursday, May 21. The afternoon high is 61 degrees, and the low at night is 49 degrees, according to the NWS. A slight chance of showers and thunderstorms develops late Thursday night.

Rain chances increase Friday, May 22, with scattered showers and a few thunderstorms possible, especially after 7 a.m. Skies stay mostly cloudy with highs near 64 degrees. At night, winds gust up to 21 mph with a low of 53 degrees and a 30 percent chance of rain.
