BRANCH COUNTY — Each of the county’s municipalities celebrates Memorial Day this year on Monday, May 25, some with small celebrations, others with larger events, but all in honor of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country
COLDWATER
For the second year, the Four Corners Park speeches and memorials begin at 10 a.m. with the parade west on Chicago Street to the bridge over the Coldwater River.
A remembrance and wreath laying will honor those who served and died as Marines, Navy, and Coast Guard on the US-12 bridge.
Participants then cross U.S. 12 to the south side of Oak Grove Cemetery and up the hill to the Gathering of Flags War Memorial, where veterans of all U.S. wars are honored.
The city will restrict traffic on U.S. 12. Temporary road closures will occur on US-12 near Willow Lane.
UNION CITY
The largest county celebration is in the village of Union City. The American Legion Post 196 presents a parade from the high school.
Participants gather at 430 St. Joseph St. and move down to Broadway beginning at 10:30 a.m.
The parade pauses at the N. Broadway Street bridge for a wreath ceremony to honor the Navy, Marines, and Coast Guard.
There are two more pauses to lay off a wreath at Veterans Memorial Park, at the Civil War Memorial at the First Congregational Church.
The parade usually takes over an hour and ends with ceremonies at the Riverside Cemetery.
Antique Autos and Tractors line up at the middle school.
The half-hour services at Riverside Cemetery focus on honoring and paying respect to those who gave their lives for the nation’s freedom.
The Union City Fire Department holds its Pancake and Sausage Breakfast at the Fire Hall from 8 a.m. to Noon and only accepts donations.
QUINCY
The American Legion Quincy hosts the village’s annual Memorial Day Parade at 11 a.m. Any individual or group wishing to participate should assemble in the Legion parking lot at 10:30 a.m.
The parade travels west from the American Legion on Chicago Street to West Street and then into Lakeview Cemetery for a service of remembrance.
Chicago Street, U.S. 12, will be closed to traffic for the parade.
Bronson
American Legion Post 259 will host ceremonies at the Bronson Cemetery off Wayne Street at 10 a.m. to honor those from the community who served and died in the country’s wars.
The Bronson Free Methodist Church holds a donation-only Memorial Day breakfast from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at 312 E. Chicago St.
The breakfast includes pancakes, stuffed French toast, a choice of meat, hash browns, scrambled eggs, biscuits, and gravy. Veterans eat free.
