Body of missing 21-year-old boater recovered in Thousand Islands

New York State Police recovered the body of a 21-year-old man who drowned in the Thousand Islands region over the weekend.

A 21-year-old Jefferson County man fell into Chaumont Bay in the village of Chaumont on Friday afternoon, according to State Police.

Troopers said the incident was reported around 2:50 p.m. May 15. The man was the sole occupant of a small aluminum boat and reportedly fell into the water while the vessel was traveling in the bay.

Victim identified

Following an extensive search, the New York State Police Underwater Recovery Team recovered the body of Ryan J. Cloe, 21, of Carthage from the bay, troopers said.

Cloe was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said he was not wearing a life jacket.

Firefighters from the Chaumont, Watertown and Henderson fire departments assisted at the scene. A LifeNet helicopter also assisted with search operations.

Investigation ongoing

The investigation remains ongoing.
