McCONNELSVILLE — Carter Burrell’s feet were to the fire in the seventh inning with a one-run lead and the tying run on second base.
But Zanesville’s relief pitcher made a pitch and the visiting Blue Devils escaped with a 14-13 win against Morgan in a nonleague baseball game downriver.
Zanesville saw an 8-0 lead after an inning shrink to 9-7 in the fourth, and after the Raiders trimmed a 14-10 lead to one in the final frame, Burrell induced a pop out to end the game.
Slade Norris cracked a double and two singles, Mahki Murray and Logan Goldsmith had two singles and Tyson Kimble singled home two runs to pace the Blue Devils’ 12-hit attack. Noah Darnes added a double.
Coleman Steimer drove home four runs, Aaron Baker and McGwire Winner had three singles and Witten Schaad doubled and singled for Morgan; Lucas Hager, Jude Garber and Clayton Blackburn had two singles.
Fairfield Christian 6, Rosecrans 5: Connor Blair’s two-run single in a three-run fifth inning put the Knights up to stay in a comeback Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win at Gant Municipal Stadium.
The Bishops had the tying runs on base in the sixth and seventh but failed to score, as they fell one game back of FCA in the division standings.
Jacobie Balo had three singles and pitched a complete game for the Bishops, who led 5-3 in the fifth. Coen Grandstaff, Nick Bernath and Jordan Bonifield added two singles.
Ridgewood 5, Newark Cath. 2: Caleb Schultz’s three-run triple in the third inning broke a 1-all tie and fueled the Generals’ nonleague win in West Lafayette.
Logan Ridenbaugh added two singles with an RBI and Wyatt Marlatt cracked a double and scored a run for the Generals (17-9); Mason Kiser scattered six hits and one run in five innings to get the win.
Coshocton 8, Tuscarawas Valley 3: Jace Coffman’s triple and two singles backed a complete game from Cooper George in Coshocton’s nonleague conquest at Lake Park.
Parker Loomis, Calan Shaw and Clayton Watson added two singles and Champ Haley and J.J. Herman doubled for the winners. George struck out six and walked four as Coshocton improved to 12-15.
Philo 9, Cambridge 6: The visiting Electrics scored three times in the first inning in a nonleague win at Don Coss Field.
Hunter Hoffer walked twice and drove in three runs and Aaron Philip added two singles with two RBIs for Philo, which scored three times in the sixth inning to extend a 6-5 lead.
Jack Lincicome and Wyatt Tysinger combined on a five-hitter with 11 strikeouts. Tysinger, who went five innings, struck out seven.
Watkins Memorial 12, Sheridan 2: The visiting Warriors piled up 16 hits and scored nine times in the first inning in a nonleague mercy on the road.
James Solomon had two singles and Cole Cashdollar an RBI single for Sheridan, which had five hits and had no errors.
Logan 6, New Lexington 4: Dakota Waite tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings of relief in a losing cause for the visiting Panthers, who trailed 6-2 in the fifth inning in a nonleague affair to the neighboring Chieftains.
Hudson Gardner drove in two runs with two singles and Clayton McCoy also singled twice for New Lex (9-13), which lost its third straight.
Crooksville 13, Liberty Union 10: Gavin “Battlehawk” Mount drove home four runs with four singles and Jace Thompson plated three with two singles in the Ceramics’ nonleague road win in Baltimore.
Kyle Lane picked up the win in three innings of two-run relief; Lane and Joe Bob Pitcock, who doubled and singled, had two RBIs. as Crooksville (7-11) scored six times in the final two innings to overcome a 10-7 deficit.
Licking Valley 8, John Glenn 2: The host Panthers scored six times in the final three innings to secure a nonleague win in Hanover.
Noah Shumate drove in two runs with a double for John Glenn.
Softball
West M 6, Newark Cath. 1: Calie Smith blasted a two-run homer in a four-run first inning to pace the host Tornadoes (16-7) in a nonleague win in Falls Township.
Frayley Williams added a homer and double and Peyton Brown tripled for the Tornadoes; Williams, who had three RBIs, allowed no earned runs with six strikeouts in a complete game to earn the win.

West M 3, Tri-Valley 2: Ashton Ansel scored the game-winning run on ground-ball error in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a comeback win in a Muskingum Valley League baseball crossover in Falls Township.
Grady Dollings’ lead-off double was followed by Silas Kuhn’s single to start the rally. After Ansel’s fielder’s choice got Dollings home, he stole second and scored with two outs.
Dollings also singled and Ansel had two as West had seven hits. The two also handled the pitching, with Ansel striking out five in five innings.
Blayne Riley cracked two doubles and a single and Jaxson Better tripled in a run for Tri-Valley. Tanner Henry struck out 11 in five five-hit innings in a no-decision.
Rosecrans 9, Maysville 8: Jacobie Balo threw the would-be tying run out at the plate to end the game as the Bishops held on for a nonleague win in Newton Township.
Hayden Perdue drove home Nick Bernath with the go-ahead run in the sixth with a groundout to make it 9-8. It came after Bernath, who had three hits, tied the game with an RBI double two batters prior.
Carter Fitz added three singles for Rosecrans; Kolton Gifford drove home three runs with two doubles and a single for Maysville, which stole eight bases.
Circleville Logan Elm 13, New Lexington 3 (5 inn.): The error-plagued Panthers cut a six-run deficit in half in the fourth, but the Braves pulled away for a nonleague mercy.
Carter Hahn had two singles with an RBI to account for half of the Panthers’ hits. New Lex committed nine errors and allowed eight earned runs.
Fort Frye 5, Morgan 1: The Raiders had an 8-6 edge in hits and drew three walks — Casen Foley slugged two doubles — but the Cadets had four for extra bases in a nonleague loss at home.
Aaron Baker and Lucas Hager added two singles for Morgan, which trailed 4-0 through five innings.
Cambridge 12, John Glenn 1 (5 inn.): The visiting Muskies managed only three singles against the neighboring Bobcats in a nonleague loss at Don Coss Field.
Keegan Halsey singled in a run for John Glenn (8-15). Mason Gregg tossed a complete game for Cambridge.
Softball
Tuscarawas Valley 4, John Glenn 0: Ohio State-bound pitcher Brennen Reichman fired a no-hitter with 17 strikeouts and Ella Wallick homered to fuel the Trojans (21-3) in a nonleague clash of East District titans in Zoarville.
Kendall Snider struck out 11 and allowed five hits in a complete game for John Glenn.
Danville 17, West M 6: The Division VII power Blue Devils (19-5) piled up 14 hits on a windy evening on The Hill to earn a nonleague road win.
West trailed 4-3 after Peyton Brown doubled home two runs in the second, but three walks and an error led to four Danville runs in the third and West never got closer.
Brooklyn Pride clubbed a solo homer and Calie Smith and Kaley Meddings doubled for West (15-9).

Zanesville 7, Johnstown 1: Ja’ckye McBride’s two-run triple was the big blow in a five-run third inning as the Blue Devils (9-14) snapped a six-game losing streak in a Licking County League crossover at Jay Payton Field.
Mahki Murray tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks to get the win. McBride, who also singled, had three RBIs; Tyson Kimble singled, drove in a run and walked twice.
Philo 7, Indian Valley 3: The Electrics scored all of its runs in the fourth and fifth innings, as Wyatt Tysinger and K.J. Philip had two RBIs in a nonleague win against the visiting Braves in Duncan Falls.
Chase Colburn allowed three hits and one run with six strikeouts in five innings to get the win. Tysinger’s two singles accounted for the only Electric with multiple hits.
Heath 5, Sheridan 3: James Solomon and Tandon Gramlich had two-run doubles and the Generals scored five times in the first two innings in a nonleague win on the road.
T.J Connors struck out five in and allowed one earned run in six innings to get the win. Connor Roshon added two singles.
River View 12, Coshocton 2 (5 inn.): Maguire Werntz smacked a three-run homer in the first inning and Eric Arnold had three RBIs to fuel an offensive outburst for the visiting Black Bears in an MVL win at Lake Park.
Werntz, a lefty, also pitched a complete game with six strikeouts. He walked one.
Cooper George doubled and singled for Coshocton, which had five hits.

Tennis
ZHS sends two to district: Connor Baldwin and Subh Patel stayed alive in the East District tournament with their wins in the Division II sectional at Dover City Park.
Baldwin, the No. 2 seed, took down Berlin Hiland’s Noah Troyer (6-3, 6-4) in the first round and defeated Steubenville Catholic Central’s No. 1 player, J.P. Gessler, 6-0, 6-1, in the quarterfinals.
Patel took down Wintersville Indian Creek’s Sam Doerr (6-0, 6-1) in the first round, then outlasted Hiland top seed Joel Leinbach, 7-6 (9-1), 6-4, in the quarters.
Both were among four singles to advance to district seed qualifying at 10 a.m. on May 15 at Dover, with the district semifinals set for 9 a.m. on May 18. One singles winner advances to the state at Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
Baseball
Morgan 3, Vincent Warren 0: Witten Schaad set a new school record with 19 strikeouts in a one-hitter for the Raiders in a road win in Vincent. He worked around four walks.
Coleman Steimer had a double and single and Casen Foley and Aaron Baker had two singles for Morgan.
Crooksville 12, Millersport 1: Jace Thompson fired a two-hitter with nine strikeouts and got flawless defense in a nonleague Ceramics win in Laker Country.
Kyle Lane cracked two doubles, singled and scored four times out o the No. 8 hole to lead Crooksville; Kyson Riggs doubled with two singles with two RBIs.
River View 4, Coshocton 3: Maguire Werntz’s single sent home Easton Wesney with the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth inning, and Clark Frischen stranded the tying run at second base in the seventh to secure the Black Bears’ home win.
River View overcame five errors as Layton Massie drove in two runs with two singles and Blaze Klein doubled in a run. Frischen pitched two innings of shutout relief for the win.
Dylan Wood doubled and singled and Clayton Watson had two singles for Coshocton.
Claymont 12, Ridgewood 2: Nolan McMorrow clubbed a homer and two doubles for the Mustangs in an IVC mercy in Uhrichsville.
Jace McQueen and Caleb Schultz had doubles for Ridgewood.
Maysville 8, Philo 6: The Panthers got three RBIs from Kade Fusner and scored seven times in the sixth inning in a comeback MVL crossover win at home.
Trevor Hague doubled and stole one of Maysville’s 11 bases. Bryce Fisher pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief as the Panthers overcame a 6-0 deficit in the fourth.
Garrett Tom had a double and single, K.J. Philip tripled and Aaron Philip doubled with two RBIs for Philo.
Circleville 7, New Lexington 3: The Panthers managed only three hits and trailed 7-0 after three innings in a nonleague loss on the road. Carter Hahn triple, walked and scored a run for New Lex.
Rosecrans 8, Fisher Catholic 4: The Bishops overcame four errors by outscoring the Irish, 4-0, after the third inning in a Mid-State League-Cardinal Division win at Gant Municipal Stadium.
Coen Grandstaff pitched 4 1/3 innings of no-hit, scoreless relief to get the win.
Frankie Palandrani drove in three runs with two singles for Rosecrans. Hayden Perdue doubled and singled with two RBIs and Jacobie Balo also doubled and singled.
