Texas A&M’s Maroon & White Game came at a cost for one of the program’s best players, as senior linebacker Daymion Sanford suffered a brutal lower-body injury just minutes before halftime of the team’s final spring scrimmage. Last season, Sanford exploded on the scene after veteran linebacker Scooby Williams dealt with injuries, recording a career-high 57 tackles, 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and an interception.
A two-time SEC Player of the Week winner, Katy, Texas, is a perfect blend of size, speed, and athleticism, providing Elko a reliable pass rush option on third down, while his ability in coverage will be missed during what is expected to be the first half of the 2026 season. However, after a successful surgery, it’s hard to place a timeline on Sanford’s return to the field.
In his absence, Tulsa transfer linebacker Ray Coney and sophomore Noah Mikhail will be tasked with filling the void, especially in run defense, while junior Jordan Lockhart will also see extended playing time for a group lacking depth until Sanford returns.
While coach Mike Elko isn’t looking to discuss Sanford’s injury past providing new updates, his appearance at the Dallas A&M Club during the first Coach’s Night of the offseason included a brief statement regarding his star senior’s recovery process without getting into specifics, outside of the Aggie fan base offering thoughts and prayers.
“I’m not going to get into the Daymion Sanford injury. I know that’s the elephant in the room a little bit. We’re confident that we’re going to get Daymion back playing really, really good football this fall. But it’s way too early in the process for us to be able to put that down at any level that we want to. But I know a lot of people were praying for him coming out of the spring game. Please continue to do so. We’re hopeful that that recovery goes and the rehab goes the way that we think it can, because if it does, I think he’ll be able to have a really strong year for us.”
Texas A&M S&C coach Tommy Moffitt will be tasked with getting Daymion Sanford back to playing form once he is ready to get back to strength training, and knowing how well the senior performed this spring, there’s no doubt in my mind that he’ll be ready to hit the field in full force this fall.
