San Angelo police said Wednesday a 16-year-old struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run crash has died as a result of his injuries.
The boy was walking home from work when he suffered serious injuries May 6 in the 3700 block of Green Meadow Drive, police said in an earlier media release.
Aaron Tyler Metcalf, 24, of San Angelo has been charged with accident involving serious injury and was booked into the Tom Green County Jail on May 7, online jail records show. Metcalf was being held Wednesday in jail on a $200,000 bond.
Police responded just after 10 p.m. to the accident and found the teen, police said.
The driver of the vehicle that hit him had fled the scene without stopping to provide aid, police allege. Surveillance video from private residents and local businesses showed a pickup truck hit the victim before leaving the area.
The teenager was transported to a local emergency room for treatment, police said. Detectives used Automatic License Plate Reader technology to identify the possible vehicle driven by the suspect.
Detectives investigated further and identified Metcalf as the suspect, police said. With assistance from the Sterling County Sheriff’s Office and the Texas Rangers, Metcalf and the pickup were found in Sterling County.
He was detained and interviewed by detectives before being booked into the Tom Green County Jail for the felony charge, police said.
