A New Windsor man who previously pleaded guilty to attempted assault in the stabbing of a relative was sentenced May 12 in Orange County Court to 10 years in state prison and five years of post-release supervision.
Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler announced the sentence for Khiyan Bascus, 23, of New Windsor.
Bascus pleaded guilty to attempted first-degree assault, a felony.
According to Hoovler, it was alleged in documents filed and statements made in court that at approximately 9:10 a.m. on Jan. 2, 2025, a relative of Bascus was asleep at a residence in the Town of New Windsor.
The relative was awakened by Bascus allegedly stabbing him multiple times with multiple knives, without provocation.
The victim required surgery for stab wounds to the face and chest.
After the stabbing, Bascus fled the residence and was found by police in the backyard of a nearby home with blood on his hands.
A knife and clothing believed to have been used during the attack were recovered in an area where Bascus was believed to have thrown them.
At his plea proceeding, Bascus admitted that, with intent to cause serious physical injury to another person, he did attempt to cause such injury to such person or to a third person by means of a deadly weapon or a dangerous instrument.
“This defendant’s violent admitted conduct deserves the significant sentence imposed by the court,” Hoovler said in a statement released by his office. “Domestic violence has life-changing consequences for victims such as the one in this case.”
The name of Bascus’s attorney was not immediately available.
