Toledo Mud Hens hire former Tigers coach Gary Jones for rest of season

New York — The Toledo Mud Hens, the Tigers’ Triple-A affiliate, announced Tuesday that Gary Jones would be stepping in to manage the team the rest of the season.

Jones, who stepped away from coaching this year after being on manager AJ Hinch’s staff the previous four seasons, replaces interim manager Mike Hessman, who will return to his duties as hitting coach.

Hessman stepped in last week after Gabe Alvarez was fired for a violation of club policy.

Jones, 65, is a baseball lifer. He managed in the minor leagues for 18 seasons, 10 at the Triple-A level (652-605). He was managing the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (from 2018-2021) before joining Hinch’s staff.

Jones coached first base and third base, as well as working with the outfielders in his time in Detroit.
