Vote for the Register female Athlete of the Week for May 3-9

The week of May 3-9 was another eventful one for high school female athletes from the Des Moines metro area.

Area girls track and field athletes competed in conference meets as they gear up for the state qualifying meets, which take place this week. There were a number of girls soccer games and golf meets that stood out during the week as well.

Several female athletes from the metro area turned in outstanding individual performances.

Here are the Des Moines Register’s female Athlete of the Week candidates from the Des Moines metro area for the week of May 3-9. DesMoinesRegister.com readers vote to determine the winners, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Sydney Burrier, Waukee

Burrier was the decisive force on offense for the Class 3A No. 4 Waukee girls soccer team during a 2-0 victory over No. 6 Ankeny on May 4 at Waukee.

Burrier scored both goals in the game to help Waukee improve to 5-1-3 with the win.

Addy Wood, Norwalk

Wood came up clutch for the Class 2A No. 2 Norwalk girls soccer team during a 2-1 victory over 1A No. 2 Des Moines Christian on May 5 at Des Moines.

Wood had a hand in both Warrior goals. She scored one goal and assisted on the other.

Anna Wahman, Southeast Polk

Wahman tied for the lowest score at the Southeast Polk Girls Golf Invitational on May 7 at the Copper Creek Golf Club and Events Center in Pleasant Hill.

Wahman shot a 1-over par 18-hole round of 72. She shared the lowest score with Cedar Rapids Washington’s Lily Belle Barker.

Tatum Johnson, Urbandale

Johnson placed first in the girls shot put at the CIML girls conference track and field meet on May 7 at Johnston.

Johnson won the event with a toss of 41 feet, 8 inches. She won by 2 feet, 3.75 inches.

Saleah Vivanh-Vong, Des Moines East

Vivanh-Vong turned in a dominant performance for the Des Moines East girls golf team during the Dragon Invitational on May 4 at the Jester Park Golf Course in Granger.

Vivanh-Vong was the meet’s individual medalist by an impressive three strokes. She shot a 2-over par round of 74 over 18 holes.
