Granny Basketball exhibition game may lead to local team

A Granny Basketball League exhibition game played in Visalia last month may result in a Tulare County team.

A meeting to discuss this possibility has been scheduled at the Visalia Branch of the Tulare County Library, 200 W. Oak Ave., Visalia, at 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 16. Barb Trammell, who founded the 800-player league, which now has teams representing 57 cities in 11 states and one Canadian province, will be there to provide information about the league.

Granny basketball, which is for women 50 and older with or without any previous basketball experience, is based on 1920s-style women’s rules.

“You have to stay in your third of the court,” Trammell said. “There’s no running and jumping and no physical contact, and you can only dribble twice. You always have to keep one foot on the floor when you go in for layups or shots of any kind.”

She added that you can’t run, but you are allowed to “hurry.”

“The other difference is our three-point shots, our ‘granny shots,’ between your legs and throwing it underhanded towards the basket,” she said.

The exhibition game, played at the Anthony Community Center, featured members of two league teams, the California Poppies and the Oakdale Broncos. Several local women who just came to watch the game also played.
