The Tigers on Sunday called up infielder/outfielder Gage Workman from Triple-A Toledo to take the roster spot of Kerry Carpenter, who is being placed on the injured list after suffering a shoulder injury on Bobby Witt’s inside-the-park home run during Saturday night’s 5-2 loss at Kansas City.
Here’s a quick primer on Workman.
How old is Gage Workman?
He is 26. He was born Oct. 24, 1999, in Chandler, Arizona.
When was Gage Workman drafted?
Workman was drafted twice. First, he was selected in the 14th round of the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft out of high school by the Milwaukee Brewers, but he didn’t sign. He went to college at Arizona State (where he was teammates with current Tigers first baseman Spencer Torkelson). Then, in the 2020 draft (the same draft Detroit took Torkelson No. 1 overall), the Tigers selected Workman in the fourth round. He received a $1 million bonus.
Is Gage Workman considered a top prospect?
No. Workman is not considered a prospect, because he’s played in the major leagues. After playing in the Tigers’ minor-league system from 2021-24, reaching as high as Double-A Erie, he was left unprotected for the 2024 Rule 5 Draft and he was selected by the Chicago Cubs. He made the Cubs’ Opening Day roster in 2025 and played in nine games, struggling offensively and defensively, before he was traded to the Chicago White Sox, with whom he played in three games before suffering a hip injury. He later was DFA’d again, and he returned to the Tigers’ organization in May 2025.
What are Gage Workman’s stats?
Workman, a left-handed hitter, is batting .358/.413/.590 with Triple-A Toledo this season, with four home runs, 28 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 35 games. He’s struck out 35 times and walked 13. Workman’s best minor-league season was in 2024 with Erie, when he had 18 home runs and 89 RBIs with an .843 OPS in 126 games. He had 30 steals.
What position does Gage Workman play?
This season at Toledo, Workman has played exclusively in the infield, mostly at shortstop but also at third base and second base. In 2025 at Toledo, he played 53 games in the outfield, including 21 in center field and 21 in right.
What is Gage Workman’s middle name?
It’s a good one for a baseball player — Tater. That was his grandfather’s nickname, too.
