What's wrong with Discord? More than 60,000 reports on Downdetector

Nearly 70,000 users, including in Florida, reported issues with Discord Friday afternoon, May 8, according to Downdetector, which provides real-time outage updates.

At 3:49 p.m., 67,349 users reported outages. That number dropped to 37,217 as of 4:11 p.m.

The outages were spread out across the country, with hotspots in large cities including New York, Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

At 3:08 p.m. ET, Discord reported it was investigating errors in its API systems and later said it identified the cause, noting that many users were unable to start their sessions and were experiencing issues across the service, including logging in and sending messages.

As of 5:08 p.m., Discord said it was continuing recovery operations to get the service to “a fully healthy state.”

The Discord status updates website showed increased API errors beginning Friday afternoon. According to the latest update at update at 2:08 p.m. PDT/5:08 p.m. EDT, recovery operations were continuing.

What is Discord saying about the May 8 outage

Without giving a timeframe for restoration of services, Discord acknowledged the outage in a post on X that simply said, “WORKING ON IT.”

In comments on the X thread, Discord said, “RESPONDING HERE BC WE ARE DOWN SO SORRY” and “SO MANY APOLOGIES FOR INTERRUPTING THAT IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR DAY WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT YOU CAN RESUME THAT EXPEDITIOUSLY.”
