Cowboys' first-round draft pick changes jersey numbers after one weekend

If you rushed right out and bought a Caleb Downs No. 18 jersey after rookie number assignments were first announced by the Cowboys last week, there’s good news.

It’s already a collector’s item.

The team’s initial draft pick and former Ohio State safety has made a switch from the number he sported during last weekend’s rookie mincamp. Downs will now wear No. 13, according to Tommy Yarrish of DallasCowboys.com.

That number was most recently worn on the field last season by free agent edge rusher Dante Fowler. Fowler officially signed with Seattle earlier this week, opening up the jersey that was also previously used by DeMarvion Overshown, Michael Gallup, and T.Y. Hilton, among others.

The change will have something of a ripple effect in the Cowboys equipment room.

The No. 13 had been slated to be backup quarterback Sam Howell’s number; he’ll now move to No. 16. And undrafted free agent wide receiver Jordan Hudson will go from No. 16 to the No. 18 just vacated by Downs.

And it’s all subject to change again at some point before the season. Downs, who wore No. 2 at Ohio State (and dating back to high school), has said he’d like to keep that digit in Dallas, but it currently belongs to offseason addition Cobie Durant.

“We’re gonna see what happens,” Downs said when asked about making a deal to wrestle No. 2 away from the veteran cornerback. “That’s the only thing I’m going to say about that.”

Sounds like fans may want to hold off a little longer before breaking the bank for a Downs No. 13 jersey.
