The decision by the Los Angeles Rams to draft Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson will continue to be at the top of everyone’s mind this offseason before the team hits the field in 2026. The why has already been answered by the team: They wanted to bring in a quarterback they liked to be the future of the franchise once Matthew Stafford retires.
However, some aren’t sold that Simpson is the best pick to replace the reigning MVP. Reporter Bomani Jones, who used to work at ESPN and now hosts The Right Time with Bomani Jones, recently said on an episode of “The Dominique Foxworth Show” that Simpson doesn’t fit the traits of a quarterback who can overcome his smaller 6-foot-1, 211-pound frame.
“To me, an undersized quarterback has to be absurdly physically talented or Drew Brees, right?” Jones said. “Like, just absolutely perfectly efficient like a surgeon. Ty Simpson is neither one of these things. Like, the guy who decided that Jared Goff wasn’t good enough thinks that this guy is? And by the way, let me tell you who seemed to have the hardest time understanding the Ty Simpson pick: Bama fans. And that is never a good sign.”
The crux of the whole argument around Ty Simpson is that the Rams wanted to solve their quarterback future now, and so the decision makes sense. Jones’ problem is that Simpson has a long way to go before he could potentially reach that point as a football player.
And these were the concerns with Simpson ahead of the draft. While he was a smart quarterback who played well at times, he wasn’t as physically gifted as other prospects who’ve been able to sit behind entrenched starters, like Patrick Mahomes or Jordan Love years ago.
We will have to wait and see what becomes of Simpson, but detractors will continue to emerge until the rookie proves himself.
