Packers releasing QB Desmond Ridder after signing Tyrod Taylor

The Green Bay Packers will release quarterback Desmond Ridder after signing veteran Tyrod Taylor on Monday, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Ridder, a fourth-round pick in the 2022 draft who started 17 games for the Atlanta Falcons, signed with the Packers in late December and served as a backup to Jordan Love during the postseason. It appears his chance to compete to be Love’s backup in 2026 has come and gone.

The Packers will move forward with Taylor, Kyle McCord and rookie Kyron Drones as the quarterbacks behind Love as the offseason workout program rolls on.

Taylor, who turns 37 in August, has appeared in 100 career NFL games. Once a multi-year preferred starter, Taylor has been a backup at various NFL stops for the last decade. The Packers will be his eighth team.

McCord was a 2025 draft pick of the Philadelphia Eagles. He’ll likely get a chance to compete with Drones, an undrafted free agent signing out of Virginia Tech, for the developmental No. 3 quarterback role, likely on the practice squad.

Ridder has bounced around the NFL since his two-year stint as the starter in Atlanta. He spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, Las Vegas Raiders, Cincinnati Bengals and Minnesota Vikings before landing in Green Bay.
