Dolphins GM explains team's intrigue in newly-signed UDFA QB

This offseason, the Miami Dolphins made a massive change at quarterback by releasing Tua Tagovailoa and signing Malik Willis to take his place atop the depth chart for the 2026 season.

While the Dolphins could’ve used another quarterback in the 2026 NFL draft, the team opted not to use one of their 13 picks on the position, and instead signed Iowa’s Mark Gronowski as an undrafted free agent.

In a recent interview with NFL Network, Dolphins general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan explained what the team liked about the player after the signing.

“We’re excited to get Gronowski as a UDFA,” Sullivan said. “We’ve liked him all along. He’s a big athlete, can run, can move. He’s 230-pound man with a pretty good arm. Inevitably, we ended up adding to the room, it just didn’t come in the form of a draft pick. It came in the form of a draft free agent signing, but we’re excited to get him.”

Gronowski had an impressive collegiate career at South Dakota State from 2020-24, winning two FCS national championships and national championship MVPs. He was All-Conference four of those five years and earned All-American honors once before transferring to Iowa.

In his lone year with the Hawkeyes, he completed 63.4% of his passes for 1,741 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions while rushing for 545 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Gronowski will compete with Cam Miller for the third spot on the quarterback depth chart throughout the offseason, and there’s a chance he steals that spot if he impresses during training camp and the preseason.
