He’s a plus drive blocker capable of leveraging and finishing his work but sees diminishing returns when blocking in space. Farmer will block what is in front of him in protection but frequently stalls his feet when punching, allowing active rushers to slip into his edges and find the pocket. GM Chris Ballard: “He’s a big powerful man. I think he’s going to be a really good addition to our O-line, not only from a talent standpoint, but also from a cultural standpoint. He fits what we look for and we also think he’s got some swing tackle. So, it’d be nice to add him in the mix and watch him compete.”
Jalen Farmer’s fit with the Colts
The Colts believe Farmer can play both guard and tackle positions. At a minimum, he will provide depth at both positions, but he could also compete for playing time with either Matt Goncalves or Jalen Travis. During Chris Ballard’s pre-draft press conference, he said, “We’re going to bet on some development,” referencing Goncalves and Travis, which may tell us that neither is a lock to be a starter.
