'Nightmare' hail damage hits Wheels of Wonder Museum's warehouse

The Wheels of Wonder Museum in Burkburnett had to delay an open house after a severe thunderstorm moved through the area on April 26 damaging the warehouse containing over 120,000 die cast cars.

Large hail punched holes in the warehouse roof, causing water damage to hundreds of cardboard boxes containing the packaged cars.

The open house was originally scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Thursday, offering science, technology, engineering and math activities for kids, and guests could browse the car collection.

“It’s been a nightmare so to speak,” Travis Haggard, the executive director for the Burkburnett Development Corporation, said Friday.

Haggard said everything was set and ready to go for the Thursday open house and then the storm moved through Sunday evening.

After arriving back at the warehouse to check for damage, Haggard said all the volunteers came together to immediately start unpacking the wet boxes.

“They rallied and we started unpacking,” said Haggard.

Burkburnett City Manager Lindsey McNabb-Fox also jumped on board and called Servpro; A team arrived from the company at 1 a.m. and immediately went to work.

Haggard said there was no new set date for a rescheduled open house.
