David Bruegel secures victory in Lubbock City Council District 3 race

David Bruegel secured victory with nearly 54 percent of the vote in a three-person race for Lubbock’s open District 3 City Council seat in Saturday’s municipal election.

With incumbent councilman David Glasheen not seeking re-election, the race to represent the central-Lubbock district was open for anyone to claim victory.

Bruegel, a Lubbock businessman and outgoing chairman of the county’s Republican party, received 53.8 percent of the 1,506 votes cast.Adam Hernandez, an entrepreneur, web developer and local activist, serving as communications director for Lubbock Compact, was in second with 40.6%. Gil Caley, interim president of Lubbock’s PFLAG LGBTQ advocacy group, was in third with 5.6% of the vote.

Bruegel said he was grateful and encouraged by voters’ support, winning the vast majority of precincts in the district and falling just slightly behind Hernandez in the Tech Terrace neighborhood – one of the more politically active and historically moderate neighborhoods in the city where Bruegel received 45% compared to 51% for Hernandez.

“I think my message really resonated … that central Lubbock voters are concerned about keeping the city safe and investing in our infrastructure needs for years to come,” Bruegel said. “I think our message resonated strongly about supporting our city parks and supporting the integrity of these neighborhoods we have in Lubbock. They’re major assets for us and they’re where we call home.”
