Avery Yehle crossed in a time of 2 minutes, 25.19 seconds to win the 800-meter run May 1 for the Newark Catholic girls track team during the Fredericktown Invitational.
Utica’s Olive Ley cleared 4 feet, 10 inches to tie for first in the high jump. Teammates Madison Yates, Baileigh Yates, Makenzie Watson and Madison Watson added a runner-up finish in the 1,600 relay (4:20.73).
In the boys meet, the Utica foursome of Hunter McKinney, Andrew Bebout, Hayden Quinif and Sam Krueger won the 1,600 relay (3:29.76).
McKinney, Bebout and Quinif also combined with Cameron Sarnes to take runner-up in the 800 relay (1:34.25). Deagan Workman added a runner-up finish in the shot put (44-6) as did Quinif in the pole vault (12-6) and Bebout in the 800 (2:01.22).
Beverick wins event
Cameron Beverick crossed in a time of 1 minute, 58.79 seconds to win the 800-meter run for the Johnstown boys during the Marion Night Invitational.
SOFTBALL
Johnstown beats Northridge
Jenna Hochanadel recorded two hits, surpassing 100 for her career in Johnstown’s 19-0 victory against visiting Northridge in Licking County League-Cardinal Division play.
Abigail Wood homered and tripled and knocked in five runs and also struck out five without a walk in a five-inning no-hitter for the first-place Johnnies (16-4-1, 9-3), who lead Lakewood by a half-game and host the Lancers on May 4. Brooklyn Wood added two hits, including a triple, and three RBIs, Addy Hall two hits and two runs and Sydney Gernert a two-run double.
Nya Van Ostran reached on an error for the Vikings (7-13, 2-11).
Valley wins
Madison Evans homered as a part of a three-hit game and knocked in five runs for Licking Valley in a 21-0 victory against visiting Zanesville (0-17, 0-13) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Emory Whisner also homered and doubled and drove in four runs, and Alexa Gilliam added a triple and a double and two RBIs for the Panthers (17-0, 13-0). Tori Baughman struck out seven in five one-hit innings.
BASEBALL
Granville wins on road
Jakob Culver’s two-run single highlighted a four-run top of the eighth inning, lifting Granville to a 5-1 victory at Mount Vernon (4-11, 3-9) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Max Hall added two hits, a run and an RBI, Wilson Wells a double and two runs, Luke Jakobowski a hit and a run and Chase Holtzapple a hit and an RBI for the Blue Aces (7-7, 7-5). Chase Shepherd struck out seven and allowed four hits and one unearned run in 6⅓ innings, and Levi Legg retired five of the final six batters, recording one strikeout.
Valley wins in seventh
Trey McLaughlin’s two-out walk-off single scored Silas Kyle in the bottom of the seventh inning, giving Licking Valley a 2-1 victory against visiting Zanesville (8-10, 4-8) in LCL-Buckeye play.
Brody Rodgers doubled and singled, and Brandt Lichtenauer scored a run for the Panthers (14-2, 11-1), who remain two games ahead of Watkins Memorial in the loss column. Adam West struck out seven and allowed an unearned run in a six-hitter.
