Third suspect in Thomas Rath kidnapping, murder case sentenced

One of four people charged with murder in connection with the May 2023 kidnapping and death of an Ithaca resident in Tioga County, New York, will spend at least 25 years in prison following his conviction.

Jonathan Glennon was found guilty of second-degree murder for his role in the death of Thomas P. Rath, who was forcibly abducted May 20, 2023, from his encampment in the natural area known as “The Jungle” behind Lowe’s in the City of Ithaca.

Glennon was sentenced this week in Tioga County Court to 25 years to life in prison for his conviction.

After an investigation and massive search involving multiple law enforcement agencies, Rath’s remains were found Aug. 3, 2023, buried in a shallow grave on state lands off Ekroos Road in the town of Candor in Tioga County.

By the end of that month, 10 people had been arrested in connection with Rath’s kidnapping and murder, and ultimately 13 people were charged.

Joseph M. Howell, of Newfield, who was considered the ringleader, was found guilty following a November 2024 jury trial of first-degree murder, second-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and three counts of witness intimidation.

Howell was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison and is serving his sentence at Attica Correctional Facility in Wyoming County.

Angelo Baez, of Ithaca, was convicted of first- and second-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping and was also sentenced to 25 years to life. He is incarcerated at Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus.

David C. Maycumber, of Newfield, was initially charged with first- and second-degree murder, second-degree kidnapping and intimidating a witness. He agreed to testify against the others as part of a plea agreement and pleaded guilty to second-degree kidnapping.

Maycumber is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 9, with a recommendation of a 12-year sentence as part of his plea deal. In the meantime, he is incarcerated in the Cayuga Correctional Facility in Moravia for an unrelated 2024 Chemung County burglary conviction.

Nine other suspects were charged with first-degree kidnapping in the case.
