Webster seeks volunteers for Helping Heroes Day spring yard cleanup

Webster is seeking volunteers to assist with light spring cleanup in yards around the area for individuals who are unable to do this work themselves.

The community’s second annual Helping Heroes Day on May 9 will involve raking, weeding and spreading mulch, as needed.

The Webster Parks and Recreation Department is hosting the day in cooperation with Webster Rotary Club. “This event is a culmination of the overwhelming spirit of altruism we are so fortunate to have right here in our town,” the town’s recreation supervisor, Julie Schillaci, said in a news release.

Helping Heroes Day honors Tom Smock, a Webster Parks and Recreation staff member and Webster Rotary Club president who died in 2023. According to the news release, “Tom was well-known around Webster for his generosity, often committing his time to make Webster a better place for his neighbors. His legacy is one of community and selflessness.”

One of the first male nurses to graduate from RIT Genesee School of Nursing, Smock worked at Kodak Medical for most of his career, then became an independent nurse, according to his obituary, His final job was at Webster Parks and Recreation, where, the obituary says, “he took pride in helping the building and the community thrive.”

How to volunteer

Registration is open through May 1 online through program #101007-B. Volunteers will meet at the Webster Recreation Center at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, May 9. Participants will receive more information when all registrations are completed, closer to the event date.
