2026 NFL Draft Day 3 guide for 49ers, Rams and Chargers

The early rounds of the 2026 NFL Draft have delivered plenty of surprises, and Day 3 sets up as another pivotal stretch for teams across California and beyond. After a chaotic first round and a Day 2 defined by unexpected slides and aggressive moves, several highly rated prospects remain on the board heading into Saturday.

With 157 picks still to come, Rounds 4 through 7 often become a proving ground for franchises looking to find depth, developmental talent and long‑term value — including the 49ers, Rams and Chargers, all of whom have used the opening rounds to address key needs while leaving room to maneuver on the final day.

How California NFL teams have fared so far — and what they need on Day 3

California’s three NFL teams have taken different approaches through the first three rounds, each balancing immediate needs with longer‑term roster planning as Day 3 begins.

San Francisco 49ers: San Francisco focused on adding skill talent and defensive help early, selecting wide receiver De’Zhaun Stribling in Round 2, edge defender Romello Height in Round 3 and running back Kaelon Black later in the round. The 49ers addressed explosiveness and depth but could still use help in the secondary and along the offensive line on Day 3, particularly at cornerback and interior OL.

Los Angeles Rams: The Rams made one of the more notable California picks by taking quarterback Ty Simpson in Round 1, signaling an eye toward the future at the position. They followed that with tight end Max Klare and offensive tackle Keagen Trost, adding support around the offense. On Day 3, Los Angeles may look to add defensive depth — especially in the secondary — along with another pass rusher or linebacker.

Los Angeles Chargers: The Chargers leaned into the trenches early, drafting edge rusher Akheem Mesidor in Round 1 and offensive lineman Jake Slaughter in Round 2. That foundation gives them flexibility on Day 3, where adding depth at wide receiver, cornerback or inside linebacker could be priorities as they round out the roster.
