The polls are open!
It’s time to vote for the Halifax Health Volusia-Flagler Boys Athlete of the Week for the week of April 13-18.
Last week, Spruce Creek weightlifter Brian Begnoche captured the honors, claiming 48% of the votes. The senior was a dual champion at 199 pounds during the District 4-3A meet, recording a 630 traditional total and a 590 Olympic mark.
The Daytona Beach News-Journal gathers nominees for upcoming polls from across the area via email at cvinel@usatodayco.com. Please send a player’s name, school and notable statistics for a given week. Submissions are due no later than 8 a.m. every Monday.
To round out the ballot, our staff also picks athletes from scores and stats posted online or submitted by local coaches. Athletes for all in-season sports are eligible.
Voting in the online poll below will close at 10 a.m. Monday. Votes are restricted to once per device per hour. Emailed votes will not count.
Baseball
Evan Dyett, Spruce Creek: The junior pitched six shutout innings with six strikeouts to help the Hawks clinch the District 2-7A title over University.
Anthony Panetta, Trinity Christian: The sophomore doubled and tripled, driving in a run and scoring another as the Eagles wrapped up the District 7-1A title vs. Lake Mary Prep.
Tennis
JJ Martin, Seabreeze: The junior earned District 6-3A titles in No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles with partner Hunter Shuler, advancing to the state brackets in each.
Track and field
Najir Eddins, Flagler Palm Coast: The junior captured a District 2-4A championship in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.2 seconds.
Mekhi Yan, Atlantic: The senior won a District 6-2A title in the high jump with a mark of 1.87 meters.
