The speculation can finally be put to rest. For weeks, there were whispers that the New York Jets might consider selecting Ty Simpson with the 16th overall pick. It wasn’t the most popular theory, but it lingered long enough to feel real, especially for a franchise still searching for long-term answers at quarterback.
Now, that conversation is over. Thank the Los Angeles Rams.
L.A. stepped in and removed any possibility of that scenario, taking Simpson off the board before the Jets ever had the chance to make a decision. Whether New York was seriously considering the move or simply doing its due diligence, it no longer matters. The choice has been made for them.
In some ways, that might be a good thing. The Jets entered this draft with multiple needs and a roster that still requires balance. While quarterback remains a long-term question, there’s also a clear understanding that the current window demands impact players elsewhere.
Adding a developmental passer at No. 16 would have been a gamble, one that may not have aligned with the team’s immediate goals. Now, there’s no temptation to overthink it. New York can focus on addressing more pressing needs, whether that means reinforcing the offensive line, adding a playmaker, or continuing to build out a defense that just gained a major piece earlier in the draft.
Sometimes, the board falls in your favor. Sometimes, it decides for you. In this case, the Jets won’t have to wrestle with what could have been. The path forward is clearer now, and it may be exactly what they needed
