Joe Hortiz addresses Dexter Lawrence trade speculation with Chargers

During his pre-draft press conference, Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz addressed rumors connecting the team to Giants defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence.

“I typically don’t like talking about players on other teams,” Hortiz said. “You guys know that. I’ll say he’s a great player, and I’ll leave it at that.”

The Bolts have been labeled a possible destination because they have over $48 million in cap space, the third-most in the NFL, and a need for interior defensive line help.

Lawrence reportedly requested a trade from New York after contract extension talks stalled.

There’s no doubt that Lawrence would significantly upgrade a Chargers defensive line that could use more pass rush juice. He had a down season while battling an elbow injury, but the year before that, Lawrence finished with nine sacks.

However, the Chargers have only 5 total picks in the draft. Trading away a premium pick might clash with Hortiz’s draft-centric philosophy.
