A pedestrian is dead after reportedly walking into the path of a vehicle near the intersection of Apalachee Parkway and Williams Road in eastern Leon County on Wednesday evening.
A Florida Highway Patrol spokesperson said the accident occured at about 6:45 p.m. Records released later revealed that a 22-year-old Monticello woman was driving a black sedan and traveling westbound on SR-20 when she struck the pedestrian, a man of unknown age without a known city of residence “who remains unidentified.”
A day later he was identified by FHP “as a transient from North Lauderdale.” The agency said it notified his mother in Ocala.
According to FHP, the pedestrian was walking across US-27 from south to north and exited the center grassy median “and walked directly into the path” of the vehicle.
He “sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased on scene by Leon County EMS,” according to FHP.
The westbound lanes of US-27 were blocked, and traffic was detoured for approximately three hours.
FHP was assisted on scene by the Leon County Sheriff’s Office, Leon County EMS, Tallahassee Fire Department, and Florida Department of Transportation (Midway).
So far this year in Leon County, there have been at least 70 crashes involving pedestrians and three of them have been fatal, according to the Crash Dashboard of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
