Officer claiming to be ICE visited Cincinnati schools, district says

A law enforcement officer claiming to be working for Immigration and Customs Enforcement visited multiple Cincinnati Public Schools on April 15, according to an email from the district.

Cincinnati Public Schools sent families and staff an email stating that an “out-of-town law enforcement officer,” who said they were working on behalf of ICE, visited a small number of schools that were not named by the district.

The email said the officer visited school offices to conduct wellness checks on students believed to be enrolled in the district but ultimately did not have any direct contact with students.

“The officer did not request to see or interact with any students,” the email said.

District leadership contacted the officer and directed that any future inquiries regarding Cincinnati Public Schools students be taken to the district’s Office of General Council.

The district has also reinforced its protocols for responding to law enforcement with school staff.

“Please know: the safety of our students and staff is our top priority. We remain committed to maintaining safe, supportive and welcoming school environments for every child and family we serve,” the email said.

The Enquirer reached out to ICE to confirm whether the officer was working on behalf of the agency but did not immediately receive a response.

The district asks parents to contact their child’s school directly with any questions or concerns.
