Veteran defensive lineman D.J. Reader is on the New York Giants’ radar this spring.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reports that the Giants held a meeting with Reader on Monday.
Dexter Lawrence requested a trade from New York earlier this spring after ongoing contract negotiations between him and the franchise failed to produce a deal that satisfied his expectations. The Giants’ defensive line relies heavily on the former second-team All-Pro.
Even with a content Lawrence, the Giants still needed another defensive tackle this offseason — a need that has only grown more urgent following his trade request.
Reader is one of the best free agents still available on the open market. The North Carolina native played all 17 games last season for the Detroit Lions, recording four QB hits and 28 total tackles.
The Giants have the option to sign the veteran interior defensive lineman this spring. New York’s significant interest in Reader could lead to a deal later in the offseason.
