Metro Detroit native Jamie Ding racked up his 22nd straight win on “Jeopardy!” on Monday’s episode, beating out two other contestants who hail from Michigan.
He is now one victory away from tying for fifth most wins in the TV game show’s 62-year history.
How much has he won?
Ding added another $18,600 to his prize winnings on Monday for a 22-day total of $627,600.
He entered the Final Jeopardy! round with a big lead, but lost $16,200 after missing the clue, which tested contestants’ knowledge about how the country of Colombia got its name.
Even so, Ding finished in first, ahead of two players who are also from Michigan. Catherine Hoffman, a children’s librarian from Clarkston, finished in second with $8,400. Erik Bubolz, an attorney originally from Okemos, ended the game with $1.
What’s next?
Ding will go for his 23rd straight victory on Tuesday’s episode. In Detroit, “Jeopardy!” airs on WDIV-TV (Channel 4) at 7:30 p.m. The show also streams on Hulu and Peacock.
Another win put Ding in a tie with Mattea Roach for fifth most wins in the show’s history, according to The Jeopardy! Fan, an online database of “Jeopardy!” statistics. He currently ranks sixth in terms of all-time prize winnings.
Current host Ken Jennings is the show’s all-time winningest contestant. He won 74 straight games in 2004, earning more than $2.5 million.
Who is Jamie Ding?
Ding is a 2009 graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School, where he was a successful quiz tournament participant and honor student who graduated a year early, according to a Wayne State University press release. Ding’s father, Yuchuan Ding, is a professor of neurosurgery at Wayne State.
Jamie Ding graduated from Princeton University in 2013 with a degree in molecular biology.
Now a bureaucrat and law student, he currently resides in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.
