New details provided in shooting that locked down Raines High School

A shooting near Raines High School placed the campus off Moncrief Road on lockdown, officials reported Monday afternoon, April 13.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office issued an alert at about 3:45 p.m. stating it is “investigating a shooting that occurred in a neighborhood near Raines High School Monday afternoon. The victim is not a student, and he was taken to the hospital where he is listed as stable. Our detectives and patrol officers are actively investigating in conjunction with Duval School Public Schools. We will share more details as soon as we are able. Expect heavy police presence in the area as we continue to investigate and ensure everyone’s safety.”

School district officials told Times-Union news partner First Coast News that all students and staff are safe.

In a follow-up briefing, Sheriff’s Office Cmdr. Jacob Vorpahl said dispatch received a call shortly after 2:30 p.m. about a possible fight involving a large group of males in the 6000 block of Raines Vikings Way. While still on the call, the person reported shots were fired.

First responders located a 20-year-old man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. But he will survive, Vorpahl said, noting he was not a student and it didn’t happen on campus. He said about a dozen people were detained fleeing the scene. He couldn’t say if any were students but wouldn’t be surprised if some were. They also don’t know if they have the suspect in custody at this point in the investigation.

As an abundance of caution, he said the Sheriff’s Office will staff additional officers at the school Tuesday, April 14.
