Michigan basketball has reached an agreement with Dusty May.
During the Wolverines’ national championship celebration at Crisler Center on Saturday, April 11, athletic director Warde Manuel announced that he and Dusty May had agreed to a deal that will keep him in Ann Arbor.
“He will be the leader of this basketball team for many years to come,” Manuel said before the entire crowd rose to its feet and the players started jumping around May, who was feet away from Manuel at center stage.
Previously, Manuel had told the Free Press the two sides had “a great conversation” and that he was “thrilled to have him continuing to lead our men’s basketball team and to have Anna [his wife] and his family remain in Ann Arbor.” Now it seems like they’ve taken it a step further.
It took more than four months last year from the moment Michigan and May reached a new deal before he actually signed in July, but there’s now no doubt that U-M’s head coach will lead the charge again as U-M looks to reach the Final Four again next season.
May’s previous deal featured a $4.6 million base salary for this year. That figure was set to go up by $250,000 each of the next four seasons and peaks at $5.6 million in the 2029-30 season, according to his contract previously obtained by the Free Press.
He earned a $50,000 bonus for winning the Big Ten outright, a $50,000 bonus for being named Big Ten coach of the year (media) and has earned another $200,000 for getting the Wolverines to the Final Four. He also received a $200,000 for winning the national championship game vs. UConn.
May, 49, led the Wolverines (37-3) to their winningest season in program history and the team’s first national championship since 1989. Michigan also set a Big Ten record in 2025-26 with 19 wins in the league and became the first Big Ten program in 50 years (1975-76 Indiana) to go undefeated in the league on the road.
May and company have already gotten busy on next year’s roster, earning a pledge from former Tennessee big man J.P. Estrella and hosted prospective target Juke Harris on a visit over the weekend, which included him observing the national championship parade.
