A former Detroit service station that dates to the 1920s could become a destination for gearheads.
The new owner, Devin Sykes, wants to turn the property into a do-it-yourself garage.
If his plans come to fruition, this historic property could once again help Detroit’s motorists stay on the road.
Does the project have a name?
Yes. It’s called Sykes Self-Service Garage.
Where is it?
The property is on Detroit’s east side, at Mack Avenue and Hurlbut Street. Sykes bought it for $30,000 in October 2023 from a woman who’d inherited it from her father. It was previously known as Neal’s Service.
Is it open now?
Not yet. Sykes is rehabbing the property, but he hopes to have it ready for business by fall 2027. There’s a smaller service station building near the intersection and a larger, rectangular structure toward the rear of the property which will host the main do-it-yourself garage functions.
How will it work?
Sykes is offering memberships and prepaid access as he tries to raise the remaining funds needed to open, an estimated $35,000 to $60,000, which will help determine the level of improvements. A couple of options include lifetime garage access of eight hours a month on off-peak hours for $5,000 or a $200 day pass. Small donations are also being accepted, and Sykes is looking for people with know-how as he restores the property.
What’s his background?
Sykes, 37, is an electric vehicle engineer who’s spent many years restoring and working on cars. He gained a lot of his knowledge about building restoration from the work he and his partner, Elena (they have a 19-month-old son together), have completed on their 1920s Tudor-style house on East Grand Boulevard. Their home was featured in The Detroit News in September 2023.
