Barricaded man who threatened to detonate bomb arrested in Ventura
A man who barricaded himself in a Ventura home and threatened to detonate a bomb was arrested after a lengthy standoff, police said.
Officers with the Ventura Police Department responded around 11 a.m. to a report of a suspicious person in the 8000 block of Twin River Circle, a small street in east Ventura, according to a news release. Police said the person was believed involved in an earlier vandalism.
Officers spotted the man running into a housing complex and later saw him inside a home through a window. The man refused to leave the home and threatened to detonate a bomb, Ventura police said
Officers evacuated five nearby buildings, including the building where the man was barricaded, said police Cmdr. Ryan Weeks. They also called in crisis negotiators, activated the SWAT team and requested the help of the Ventura County Sheriff’s bomb squad.
The man was flushed out of the home by the SWAT team and into the backyard, where he was taken into custody just before 5 p.m. using “tactical measures,” authorities said. The police department refused to elaborate on what kind of measures were used in the arrest.
The bomb squad also searched the home and found no explosive devices, Ventura police said.
The 45-year-old man was medically cleared at the hospital after suffering minor injuries, police said.
He was booked into Ventura County jail on suspicion of multiple felonies, including false report of a bomb, criminal threats, resisting a police officer and two counts of vandalism as well as misdemeanors for drugs.
The man is scheduled to appear in Ventura County Superior Court April 7, jail records show. He is not eligible for bail because he is on parole, according to jail records.
