The No. 10 UCLA Bruins softball team took their second win against Indiana in a 7-2 outing at Easton Stadium in Los Angeles on Saturday.
The Bruins scraped together a win against the Hoosiers in their series opener, but UCLA left no doubts in their second meeting as they won by five runs. Freshman left-handed pitcher Natalie Cable stood on the mound for all seven innings and threw gave up five hits and a walk for two runs. Cable struck out just as many batters as they got hits with five strikeouts over her complete game.
No run zone
UCLA and the Hoosiers both struggled to push themselves home for a run in the first two innings of the game, even though each team were able to get runners on base.
Scoring first
In the bottom of the third, UCLA was able to strike first with a home run to left field by senior utility Megan Grant, her 25th of the season.
Staying on top
The Hoosiers struck their own homer against Cable in the top of the fourth to tie the game up at one a piece. The Bruins held onto the lead with a run scored off of a walk, but weren’t able to get more runners home with the bases loaded.
Fifth inning homers
UCLA continued to pile on runs with a home run to begin the fifth and a two-run homer later in the inning to have three of their four hits result in a runner getting home. The Bruins led 5-1 heading into the sixth.
Closing out another win
In the top of the sixth, the Hoosiers scored their second run of the game to closeout the top half of the inning, but UCLA responded with senior Jordan Woolery blasting a double to send two UCLA runners home to put the Bruins up 7-2. Cable held Indiana to one hit in the top of the seventh and the Bruins walked away with their twelfth win against a Big Ten foe.
UCLA will close out their series against Indiana on Sunday with the finale having an anticipated start time of noon PT.
