Man who fatally shot his girlfriend in DeWitt Township sent to prison

ST. JOHNS — A man who fatally shot his girlfriend in their DeWitt Township apartment in September of 2024 has been sent to prison for a minimum of nearly two decades.

Bradley Corey, 28, appeared before 29th Circuit Judge Shannon Schlegel for sentencing on March 26 after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in January, with an agreement his minimum sentence would be 16 years.

Schlegel sentenced him to 16 years to 40 years in prison on the murder count, plus the mandatory two years for felony firearm possession. The weapons sentence runs consecutive to the murder sentence, and Corey will get credit for 562 days spent in custody. The judge also imposed a jail sentence for drug possession that will run concurrently with the murder sentence.

Corey shot Emily Hansen, 26, in the face with an AR-15-style rifle in the couple’s kitchen at Fountain Park Apartments on West Clark Road on Sept. 10, 2024, according to testimony in Corey’s preliminary examination.

Police responded to a call for a female shot and a suicidal male with a gun.

When officers arrived, Corey was standing outside of the apartment building, holding a rifle. Corey had what appeared to be fresh blood on him and made various comments, including, “Is she dead?,” a police officer testified.

A bullet casing was found beneath Hansen’s body. Numerous handguns and long guns and hundreds of rounds of ammunition also were found in the apartment, along with a bag of cocaine.

A pathologist testified Hansen had gunpowder “stippling” marks on her face and estimated she was shot from a distance of around 2 feet away.

A Bath Township police lieutenant testified that Corey said he wanted police to shoot him. Corey also said the shooting was his fault but suggested it was accidental, the lieutenant testified.
