March 20 marked the official beginning of the spring season, which means wardrobes are getting rearranged and storage spaces are being reorganized.
We all have clothes in our closet that we have not touched in months or years, but refuse to part with.
One way to remain sustainable and give items a second life is to donate to community-centered stores instead of filling up the landfill with unwanted items.
About 92 million tons of clothing is thrown out globally each year, according to an analysis of data by The Ellen MacCarther Foundation. Instead of tossing old clothes in the trash, consider more eco-friendly alternatives.
Whether you’re looking to declutter or make a quick buck, here are five secondhand stores that accept clothing and furniture donations in the Binghamton area.
Thrifty Shopper
Binghamton Thrifty Shopper
Address: 1139 Front St., Binghamton
What to know: Donations are accepted during operation hours. The Binghamton location does not accept big furniture, car seats, or mattresses.
Hours: Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.| Saturday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Endwell Thrifty Shopper
Address: 800 Hooper Rd., Endwell
What to know: Donations are accepted during hours of operation. The Endwell location does not accept mattresses, box springs, and car seats. Big furniture like dressers and couches are accepted.
Hours: Monday through Friday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Saturday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Cortland Thrifty Shopper
Address: 3654 NY-281, Cortland
What to know: Donations are accepted during regular business hours and after hours. All donations made after hours can be dropped off in the back of the store in a specific area. Items like mattresses and box springs are not accepted. The Cortland location accepts large furniture items such as bed frames, couches, appliances and bikes.
Hours: Monday through Saturday: 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. | Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Re-Up Thrift
Address: 625 Main St., Johnson City
What to know: Donations are accepted during operation hours. Any items related to clothing or accessories are accepted. Items like electronics and books are generally not accepted.
Hours: Tuesday through Saturday: 10 am to 5 p.m. Sunday: 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Northern Thrift
Address: 225 Harrison Ave., Endicott
What to know: Northern Thrift accepts all types of items, from large furniture items to clothing. Staff go through all donations to determine what is in good condition before putting it on the floor for sale. Donations are not accepted after 7 p.m.
Hours: Monday through Saturday: 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday: 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
America’s Attic
Address: 308 Harry L. Drive, Johnson City
What to know: America’s Attic is a secondhand consignment store specifically for furniture. Pick-up service is only offered for large-volume furniture pickups. Items America’s Attic typically looks for: furniture, decorative accessories (pictures, lamps, prints, mirrors).
Hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday: 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Goodwill NYNJ Store & Donation Center
Address: 3701 Vestal Parkway East, Vestal
What to know: Items like stained or damaged clothing, medical equipment, car seats, and power tools are not accepted. Visit goodwillnynj.org for a full donation guide. Donations are accepted during regular hours of operation.
