WAUPUN – Waupun fire crews responded at 12:45 p.m. Friday, March 20, to an oil spill at the intersection of East Main Street and Gateway Drive.
Officials said about 100 gallons of used cooking oil spilled from a tanker truck after an equipment failure. The leak was stopped before crews arrived, and the truck and driver remained on scene.
Firefighters applied absorbent material to the affected roadway. The spill began on the southbound off-ramp from U.S. 151 to State 49, then continued west along State 49/East Main Street. Traffic tracked oil farther west to Young Street, south on Shaler Drive to East Jefferson Street, and north on Gateway Drive to Kelly Avenue.
Crews used about 150 bags of oil absorbent. The Waupun Department of Public Works also provided a salt spreader truck, which was used to distribute sand in the area.
A secondary crash involving one vehicle occurred in the intersection, and the spill is believed to have contributed.
DPW crews plan to sweep remaining debris Monday, officials said.
