A crowded Colts secondary room continues to grow, as Indianapolis announced Thursday it had re-signed cornerback Cameron Mitchell.
After Mitchell, the former fifth-round pick from the 2023 NFL Draft, was waived Sept. 30 of last season, Indianapolis signed him to its practice squad Oct. 4 and added him to the team’s 53-man roster Nov. 1. He would ping-pong around the roster throughout the rest of the season, being waived Nov. 22 and then re-joining the practice squad Nov. 25 and later being elevated to the 53-man roster again Dec. 9 for the remainder of the 2025 campaign.
Mitchell appeared in eight games with the Colts last season, making one start — the season-finale against the Texans. The 24-year-old recorded 18 tackles — two for a loss — and defended four passes in his partial season in Indianapolis. Earlier in the year, Mitchell appeared in two games with the Browns before being waived. Mitchell was drafted by the Browns in 2023 and spent two full seasons, along with the first month of 2025, in Cleveland. He’s appeared in 40 games in his NFL career and made five starts.
The younger cornerback now will join a fierce roster competition in training camp that already seems to have its starters solidified in former All-Pros Charvarius Ward and Sauce Gardner. The Colts added Bengals veteran Cam Taylor-Britt, who spent three seasons in Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo’s system in Cincinnati, into the mix earlier this week on a one-year deal. Last year’s third-round pick, Justin Walley, also is slated to factor into the rotational mix at corner as he returns from a torn ACL he suffered during preseason action last summer at a point where he looked prime for a starting cornerback spot.
The Colts also have veterans Mekhi Blackmon and Jaylon Jones and recent undrafted rookies Johnathan Edwards and Wyett Ekeler on the roster at corner, setting up a fierce battle for the final few rotational spots once camp opens.
