Gary Boren, a retired Lubbock businessman and former city council and school board member, announced his intent to run in the special election for the city’s District 4 council seat.
The special election will fill the seat recently vacated by Councilman Brayden Rose, who announced earlier this month he would resign midway through his term so he can focus on caring for his family.
Boren, a Lubbock native and former owner of the G. Boren Services event staffing company, announced his candidacy in a news release touting his experience in public service and as a business owner.“Every decision I’ve ever made in public service has been guided by one thing, Lubbock values,”Boren said. “I’ve always stood with the taxpayers, families & small businesses who built this community, and I always will.”
Boren currently serves on the Lubbock County Expo Center Local Government Corporation Board of Directors.
Gov. Greg Abbott recently re-appointed him to the Brazos River Authority Board.Boren previously served as a council member representing District 3 before he resigned in 2007 amidst turbulence at city hall, which the Avalanche-Journal reported on at the time and later explored in a 2018 editorial during his run for county judge.
Previously, Boren was elected to the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees, where he served as president.
Boren twice sought the Republican nomination for Lubbock County judge in 2018 and 2022, losing to eventual winner and current County Judge Curtis Parrish both times.
Boren said he looks forward to sharing more of his plans and vision for Lubbock in the days ahead.
Special election for Lubbock City Council District 4 seat
Rose was first elected to his seat in 2024 after running unopposed. His term was set to end in 2028, and the winner of the upcoming special election will be tasked with serving the remainder of the term.
According to the city, Rose will continue to serve in his position until the city holds a special election for his seat and his successor is duly elected.
Because Rose’s announcement came well after the candidate filing period for the May municipal election, the city council is set to call for a special election to occur later. The council will set and announce that election date at its March 24 meeting at 2 p.m. at Citizens Tower.
