Most refunds are issued within 21 days, the IRS said, when submitted electronically for direct deposit. Mailed returns normally take 6-8 weeks. Fortunately, checking your return status is simple.

The IRS expects to receive about 164 million individual tax returns for tax year 2025 to be filed ahead of the federal deadline on Wednesday, April 15, the agency said in a release. As of March 6, the agency has received 60.7 million tax returns and processed nearly all of them.

When should I call about my tax return?

You should only call the IRS if Where’s My Refund recommends it.

What is the tax filing deadline?

The deadline to file your taxes is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.
