Gardiner was first hired on Jan. 13, 1997, was promoted to lieutenant in September 2001, captain in February 2005, fire marshal in May 2016 and ultimately chief of the department in July 2021.

In the announcement, the fire department’s statement says Gardiner worked to ensure that Binghamton firefighters had “modern, reliable apparatus, equipment and tools, and supported advanced training opportunities outside the department” in order to prepare crews for “any situation.”

“We thank Chief Gardiner for his leadership, dedication and commitment to the Binghamton Fire Department and the community we proudly serve,” the statement reads. “You will be missed.”

A message to the department for additional comment has not yet been returned.
