No. 2 Longhorns baseball open SEC play with first loss of season

The Texas baseball team lost its first game of the season Friday, falling to Ole Miss, 9-8 in 11 innings at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Friday night. The game was the opening of the SEC conference season.

The Longhorns were a perfect 16-0 and No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll before the loss to the Rebels. The 16-game win streak is tied for the best start for the program since 2025.

The 4-hour, 34-minute game got wild at the end. Texas took a 7-3 lead in the eighth when Anthony Pack, Jr. hit a three-run home. UT was one out from winning its SEC opener, but Ole Miss outfielder Tristan Bissetta crushed a go-ahead grand slam to give the Rebels an 8-7 lead.

In the bottom of the ninth, Texas was down to its final strike, but Temo Bacerra hit a single to tie the game and force extra innings.

The Rebels took the lead in the top of the 11th and Texas got the tying run on first and and the winning run at the plate, but Ole Miss righty Landon Waters ended the rally with a strikeout.

Texas will play game two of its weekend series with Ole Miss Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
