Walmart rolling out digital price tags. What to know.

Walmart is expanding digital shelf labels to all of its U.S. locations within the next year.

The digital price tags, controlled through a centralized system, will soon replace paper, hand-replaced tags on shelves, according to a Walmart news release.

The new system allows for the quick updating of prices. Prices that may have originally taken multiple days to be completed, can now be done in minutes.

Walmart first introduced digital shelf labels at a Walmart location in Grapevine, Texas, a part of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, in 2024. Earlier this year, the labels were installed at about 2,300 more locations.

Here’s what to know about Walmart’s new digital shelf labels.

What are Walmart’s digital shelf labels?

Walmart’s new digital shelf labels are just a new version of a price tag. The labels do not feature cameras or microphones, a Walmart news release states.

When will digital shelf labels be installed at US Walmart stores?

Digital shelf labels will be a chain-wide standard within the next year, a Walmart news release states.

Faster online orders fulfillment

The new digital shelf labels also help Walmart employees stock items and fulfil online orders more quickly.

Using a mobile device, employees can activate LED lights on the labels to identify where items need to be restocked or where items for online orders are located, a Walmart news release said. That reduces the need for guessing and backtracking, and improves efficiency, the retail giant said.
