The Hometown Life region, covering much of west metro Detroit, had 10 competitors advance to the championship matches of the MHSAA individual wrestling state finals on March 7 at Ford Field, six of whom won state titles.
That included five wrestlers from Detroit Catholic Central.
Here’s who took first place in downtown Detroit:
Jamison Gregory, Detroit Catholic Central
Finish: Defeated Davison’s Steve Vaughn 8-0 by major decision to win the 126-pound state championship.
Grade: 11
Record: 34-7
Previous best finish: Fifth at 126 as a sophomore, third at 113 as a freshman.
Wyatt Lees, Detroit Catholic Central
Finish: Defeated Grand Ledge’s Eben Abdo 7-1 to win the 132-pound state championship.
Grade: 12
Record: 44-3
Previous best finish: Won state titles at 120 as a junior, 113 as a sophomore and 106 as a freshman.
Note: Became the sixth wrestler in MHSAA history to finish with four team and four individual state titles, and the first from CC to do so.
Grayson Fuchs, Detroit Catholic Central
Finish: Defeated Brother Rice’s Deacon MacNeill 8-6 to win the 150-pound state championship.
Grade: 11
Record: 29-1
Previous best finish: Won state titles at 144 as a sophomore and 126 as a freshman.
Braxten Roche, Detroit Catholic Central
Finish: Defeated Temperance Bedford’s Zach Miracle 23-11 to win the 175-pound state championship.
Grade: 10
Record: 28-7
Previous best finish: Fifth at 157 as a freshman.
Caden Krueger, Detroit Catholic Central
Finish: Defeated Brighton’s Dominic Nauss 7-5 to win the 190-pound state championship.
Grade: 11
Record: 42-4
Previous best finish: Third at 175 as a sophomore.
Nakayla Dawson, Westland John Glenn
Finish: Defeated Frankfort’s Isabella Crompton 17-1 by technical fall to win the 115-pound state championship.
Grade: 12
Record: 15-0
Previous best: Won state titles at 110 as a junior and sophomore, and 105 as a freshman.
Note: Ends career as a four-time state champion.
