We're called 'Floridians' but what are residents of other states called?

If you’re a long-time resident of Florida, you know you’re considered a “Floridian.”

A demonym is the word used for the residents of a country, state or city. In many cases, the demonym makes sense and follows the rules of grammar that English teachers from the beginning of time have tried to pound into our heads.

A resident of Florida is a Floridian, according to the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.

What about residents of these Florida cities? What are they called?

The USA TODAY NETWORK Florida conducted a very informal poll of its editors in 2022 — and we may have Googled a few, too — and here’s what they came up with for residents of their cities:

In designating the natives in each state, the following forms will be used, according to the U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual.

Some of the more unusual state demonyms

State Symbols USA lists a few other demonyms for residents of some states that deviate from what the official U.S. Government Publishing Office Style Manual recommends. The demonym in bold is what the Publishing Office said should be used.
