Two people were injured, one critically, in an early morning shooting at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, 945 N. 12th St. near downtown Milwaukee.
Police said the shooting happened around 2:15 a.m. Monday, March 2. A 40-year-old victim sustained a life-threatening gunshot injury in the incident and is being treated at the hospital. A second victim, 38, was also injured and is being treated.
Police apprehended a 37-year-old in connection with the incident. Neither the victims nor the person arrested have been identified.
The shooting took place inside the hospital, an Aurora spokesperson told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Neither Milwaukee police nor Aurora have specified how a weapon made its way into the facility. Police declined to answer additional questions about the shooting and other security measures at the hospital. No information was immediately available about what kind of gun was used in the shooting. There are metal detectors at Aurora Sinai’s main entrance and the entrance to its emergency room.
“We are grateful for [the Milwaukee Police Department’s] rapid response and their continued partnership,” the hospital said in a statement. “Care is being provided for those affected, and there is no ongoing risk to the public.”
There have been 47 non-fatal shootings so far this year in Milwaukee, according to police crime data. That total does not include the hospital shooting or other shootings over the weekend. By this time last year, there had been 59 non-fatal shootings in the city, crime data shows.
