Indianapolis — Germie Bernard’s time in East Lansing was short-lived, despite the fact that he showed some major flashes of potential during his 2022 freshman season.
The receiving prospect transferred to Washington before the 2023 season, a year in which the Huskies reached the national title game, and then followed head coach Kalen DeBoer to Alabama in 2024, where he finished his college career this past season and became an NFL Draft prospect.
Reflecting on the year he spent with the Spartans during the NFL Combine in Indianapolis, Bernard said he learned a valuable lesson.
“What I learned about myself is, I know I can’t fit in with everybody. I know that God called me for a higher purpose and everybody’s not on the same journey as you’re going down, so you can’t please everybody,” Bernard said. “You can’t go down the same route as everybody (else) is going.”
Bernard, 22, is currently projected as a middle-round pick, with Mock Draft Database placing his consensus ranking at No. 67. He was one of many excellent pass catchers at Washington but took on a bigger role at Alabama, tallying 1,656 yards and nine touchdowns over his last two seasons, including a career-high nine touchdowns in 2025.
“You’ve gotta be different,” Bernard continued. “That’s what God called us to be, to be different. We can’t fit into this world; he didn’t make us to be in this world. He made us to be in a different light. So I learned that really young, once I got to college, and that’s something I’ll always carry … into my future.”
